For over a year now, so much has been made about what we cannot do, should not do and will not do. With some light at the end of this pandemic tunnel, your Central Florida Chapter is looking forward to resuming in-person activities with some new events and initiatives. PSAA Event Promotions

During the pandemic, our chapter worked hard toward bringing programs that were safe and within the guidelines of Penn State. In doing so, we announced PSAA virtual events that you, our members, could participate in if you chose to. Our chapter will continue to do so especially for the rest of this fiscal year and into the 2021-2022 fiscal year. Please connect and keep checking our website and social media for updates on these events and more.

Career Development and Networking

Over the last few years, our chapter has been looking on how we can develop services that we can offer for our members. After discussions with Career Services at Penn State, within our board meetings and with some of our members, we decided to focus on a few areas.

  1. Establish a LinkedIn account that will help connect local Penn Staters professionally and make them available to local recruiters. (Completed in 2020)
  2. Create a members-only page on our website that will serve as a location for our members to search job postings that are available and sponsored here. (Coming in mid-2021)
  3. Establishing a mentor program from experienced professionals within our chapter to support our professionals who are seeking career development. (Coming in mid-2021)
  4. Looking at where we can build partnerships with companies here and connecting them with Penn State colleges which may include but are not limited to job fairs.

We hope that the work we do here will serve as a benefit for our members while building our presence here in central Florida.

Scholarship Endowment

As discussed in our 2020 Recap, our chapter leaders felt that in order to truly serve our students and stabilize the funding for our scholarship program, a scholarship endowment is necessary. We explored multiple ways to approach the requirement of raising $50k, which included working with other local chapters. After many discussions with PSAA, we believe the best way to raise funds is to commit to it within our own chapter, take a conservative approach and establish proven methods of fundraising. This will build our capital enough to meet our commitment. Once meeting our commitment, we will receive a matching contribution by the Board of Trustees that will solidify our scholarship program for future generations here in central Florida. We are excited for this opportunity and hope that you will join us in creating our endowment.

Membership Perks

Since 2019, our chapter has been reaching out to different local and State College-based businesses to see what discounts we can offer our members. We originally looked at creating a membership discount card that would be sold to members either as part of membership dues or on the side. Doing so would help us raise funds for our scholarship and chapter programs, but we found that the viability of a “card program” may not be viable. Tied in with our efforts to build a portal on our website for members for career services, we would include these discounts within the site. We anticipate the launch of this program to take place by the start of fiscal year 2021-2022, although it may be pushed based on our ability to connect with businesses during the pandemic. If you are a business owner that would like to help us in this area, please let us know.
